On the fees for German state television and radio broadcasting

The petitioner objects to the system of public subsidies to German state television and radiobroadcasting services. The petitioner is of the opinion that this constitutes state aid and may lead to distortions of competition. In particular, the petitioner is concerned by the financing of major sport events such as football tournaments and in particular the World Cup. The petitioner believes that public broadcasting arrangements for such events and their indirect financing is leading to ever-higher fees for athletes and public officials linked to such events. He calls upon the EU institutions to ensure that the Federal Republic of Germany is ordered to modify current state TV and radio broadcasting arrangements such that there can be no further public subsidies of major sport events, as alleged in the petition.
