On behalf of ‘Vida Silvestre’, on the promotion of measures to protect the seas and marine biodiversity

The petitioner asks for Member States to cut drastically the volume of industrial fishing and manage fishing quotas using environmental and social sustainability criteria. He points out that under a sustainable fishing policy, low impact small-scale fisheries must be given priority as the only way of guaranteeing protection for marine biodiversity. The petitioner proposes that the European Parliament establish economic subsidies for small-scale fisheries so that these fisheries are promoted in all the EU’s territories and Member States. Likewise, the petitioner urges the EU institutions and its Member States to create protected marine areas in the territorial waters of all the EU Member States where marine biodiversity can be protected through sustainability criteria and strict controls by the authorities responsible for this field.
