The petitioner opposes plans by the municipal authorities to destroy a green area by felling 35 fully-grown trees in a town square as part of a European Structural Fund (ESF) ‘redevelopment’ project that has been approved without prior public public consultation. The destruction of a green area located in the town centre runs counter to the climate change adjustment, environmental protection and resource efficiency targets set out in Article 9 (5) and (6) of Regulation (EU) No 1303/2013 laying down common provisions regarding the European Structural Funds and rules to ensure its effective use. The petition signatories, however, call for EU funds to be used for the conservation and protection of the square and the restoration of the green area by replanting trees, making proper use of the funds in question.
