On the need to include environmental protection measures to prevent deforestation in the EU-Mercosur trade agreements

The petitioner points out that the South American forests are vital for the environmental sustainability and global health of the planet. The petitioner asks that the EU-Mercosur trade agreements to be ratified by the EU Member States and the European Parliament contain provisions obliging the Mercosur countries, in particular Brazil, in view of the policy adopted by its President regarding the Amazonian forest, to respect and adhere to the Paris Agreement regarding the climate. The petitioner argues that it is inadmissible to trade environmental destruction for the prospect of commercial gain.
