The petitioner states that wastewater from the Puglian towns of Manduria and Sava is transferred to a plant which is less than five kilometres from the Puglian coast and which discharges into the sea. The emergency drainage basin is connected to a tourist port and a beach. A nature reserve is in the vicinity of the basin. The petitioner is concerned about a deterioration in the quality of coastal waters resulting from wastewater being discharged into the sea. Furthermore, the laying of sewage pipes over a distance of more than 30 km is destroying Mediterranean vegetation, vineyards and olive groves. Although the final project has not yet been submitted, building work for the wastewater treatment plant has already started. The petitioners call for the project to be stopped and for a low-impact solution with low environmental risk to be found.
