On video surveillance to prevent abuse of children and the elderly

The petitioner expresses concern at the numerous episodes of mistreatment and abuse in kindergartens and centres for the elderly in Italy. He believes that video surveillance systems in these facilities would be of great help in preventing the mistreatment and abuse of particularly vulnerable individuals and accordingly urges the European Parliament to seek an amendment to Regulation (EU) 2016/679 on the protection of personal data, providing for specific exemptions in kindergartens and elderly care centres. The petitioner argues that the physical and mental inviolability of vulnerable persons such as children and the elderly should prevail over the protection of privacy.
