On the pollution of the Ferreira River in Portugal

The petitioner complains about the heavy pollution of the Ferreira River in Lordelo-Paredes, Portugal. She claims that the inaction and incapacity of the local wastewater treatment plant has allowed for continued pollution of the river for decades, which has gradually decimated the ecosystem and endangered the health of the local population. Moreover, according to the petitioner, in the past year waste has been discharged almost directly into the river, causing it to become an “open-sky wastewater tank” and a breeding ground for disease. The petitioner criticises the inaction of the responsible environmental bodies and calls for urgent measures to be adopted to put an end to the pollution.
