On financial assistance to people affected by the 2017 fires in Portugal

The petitioner presents the desperate situation of numerous persons affected by the forest fires of 2017 in Portugal, who have not been able to obtain financial assistance from the Portuguese authorities despite the existence of substantial national and EU funding. He states that thousands of people, both Portuguese and EU citizens residing in Portugal, are still homeless, in need of medical care and that many of them have lost their entire livelihoods. Nevertheless, the petitioner argues, they have not been able to claim the financial aid they were entitled to due to restrictive and ill-conceived legislation as well as due to bad communication of their rights by the relevant Portuguese authorities.
