The petitioner expresses concern at the serious danger to human health and the environment caused by pollution from a steel plant in Servola, in the province of Trieste, where benzene, PM 10 and PAH upper limits have apparently been exceeded. He also points out that hazardous waste dumped in the vicinity is causing soil, groundwater and marine pollution. He stresses that application of the precautionary principle is essential when it comes to public health and environmental protection in Europe. Finally, he calls for the opening of proceedings against Italy for infringement of EU legislation.
