The petitioner complains that waste water is being discharged from the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant into Dublin Bay, designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The petitioner believes that this threatens water quality, biodiversity, the ecosystem and the health of more than 300 000 inhabitants. The petitioner reports that the problem was particularly bad in the summer of 2019, when a temporary ban on bathing in several Dublin beaches was in place, owing to an excessive discharge of waste water from the Ringsend treatment plant. The petitioner also reports that infringement proceedings have been brought by the Commission against Ireland for its non-compliance with the relevant EU legislation in this regard. The petitioner requests that Parliament ensure that the Irish Government complies with the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and addresses the problems caused by waste water discharge from the Ringsend treatment plant.
