The petitioner complains that the Island Council of Tenerife has commissioned a company with the culling of 1000 wild goats that roam freely in the Anaga and Teno rural parks. The petitioner fears that this might lead to shot animals escaping and suffering for several days in the mountains. The petitioner also points out that the plan is being co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). The petitioner states that Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 of 24 September 2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing, which has been in force since 1 January 2013, and the other rules on animal welfare are intended to ensure that unnecessary pain or suffering is avoided, based on the latest scientific information available. The petitioner asks for help from the European Union to prevent such a cull.
