The petitioner claims that in the city of Cáceres and the municipality of Sierra de Fuentes citizens are threatened by the project of an open pit lithium mine “San José / Valdeflórez” that an Australian company wants to open. In relation to this project, the General Directorate of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Junta de Extremadura is processing or has processed a series of mining rights procedures. The petitioner considers that violations of European Union legislation have been incurred, specifically:– Directive 2003/4/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2003 on public access to environmental information and repealing Council Directive 90/313/EEC.– Directive 2006/21/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 March 2006 on the management of waste from extractive industries and amending Directive 2004/35/EC - Statement by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.– Directive 2001/42/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 June 2001 on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment and Directive 2011/92/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 2011 on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment Text with EEA relevance relative concerning the evaluation of the impact of certain public and private projects on the environment, in relation to Council Directive 92/43/EC of May 21, 1992, on the conservation of natural habitats and wildlife and wild flora and with Directive 2009/147/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, of November 30, 2009, concerning the conservation of wild birds.– Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy.

Not yet a PRO argument.

The proposed mine would be sited within a near-pristine landscape on the very edge of a Unesco world-heritage-site small city. The mine is projected to last but thirty years, and then would be gone, leaving behind horrific environmental scars: the diamentric opposite of short-term pain etc. It is staggering that this proposal is even being considered. The location could not be more unsuitable. The poor people of Caceres are being bullied by outsiders motivated purely by greed. To allow this mine to proceed would be callous and montrous: corporate vandalism on a guargantuan scale.
