The petitioner calls for the introduction of an EU-wide system of food labelling based on the traffic light principle, indicating in particular foodstuff containing high levels of sugar, fat, and salt. The petitioner is of the view that current food labelling practices are increasingly non-transparent for consumers, and that this is leading to uninformed food choices, which may result in preventable, large scale public health problems. The petitioner therefore calls the European Parliament to take the lead on the issue of food safety and its link with public health, in view of an ageing European population and a food industry in need of regulatory oversight.
