On a commission of inquiry with a view to attenuating social and economic differences between Member States

The petitioner makes a diagnosis in relation to the stalemate of the common EU pathway, based on a principle of reciprocity and initiated in 1957 by the six founding countries; he argues that this now seems to have reached a deadlock, resulting in ‘the weakening of a nascent sense of European identity’. In order to make the European project credible once again, he therefore calls for ‘a reassertion of that principle of reciprocity and of concrete solidarity among citizens of the Union. Without this spirit of sharing and pooling of responsibilities between Member States, we can expect an uncontrollable wave of populism on top of a systemic economic crisis. He calls on the President of the European Commissionto establish ‘a commission to look into the nature of the problems and imbalances, responding to citizens’ concerns, and to propose corrective measures in order to achieve one of the EU’s objectives: to mitigate social and economic differences between Member States’.
