The petitioner reports her experience in seeking work through an NGO (European network on independent living ENIL) that maintains contacts with associations throughout Europe for the international mobility of disabled people. Despite these privileged channels, her efforts to secure a job were unsuccessful in all Member States (including the UK). She therefore calls on the European Parliament to contribute to the enactment of European legislation to protect disabled job seekers and to monitor, in agreement with the Commission, the application by the Member States of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to which the EU is a contracting party since 2011. She highlights the fact that work is not a luxury for people with disabilities, but a necessity that must be matched by a right that is effectively protected on the basis of the principle of equality, not only formally but also in practice.
