The petitioner complains that the rail line between Madrid, Aranda and Burgos, which was opened in 1968, has now been closed to freight transport for eight years. He maintains that ADIF, Spain’s railway infrastructure authority, has not carried out the right studies, and calls for the line, which would provide a vital link between the Castile and León region and Madrid, to be treated as a priority at European level (i.e. part of the E-5 corridor stretching from the UK to Algeciras). He calls for rail to be used to boost freight transport between Algeciras and Irún, as currently just 3% of the 768 million tonnes of freight carried annually between Algeciras, Madrid and Irún is moved by rail.
