Petition is addressed to: Petitionsausschuss des Europäischen Parlaments

The petitioner claims that the municipality of Klaipėda on the one hand is participating in the climate change program and plans to install a solar power plant but, on the other hand, cuts high numbers of mature trees (e.g. between 2011 and 2013: 1615 trees were felled) because of some city building projects. The petitioner highlights that planting trees is a highly recommended remedy in the fight against climate change. The petitioner further contests the planned projects in the city centre, in particular the musical theatre, as the petitioner considers them detrimental to the value of the historical centre, and deplores that other locations were eliminated from the location competition. The petitioner stresses the objections made by the public, the pressing need for a community home and the alleged non-transparent decision-making procedures. The petitioner claims that any EU funds for these building projects should not be used to the detriment of the ecological status and historic value of the city of Klaipėda.
