Researchers need certainty on scientific collaboration between the UK and EU.

Science has been a key success of the EU and must remain a priority to keep Europe competitive. International collaboration makes science stronger and we should not let Brexit disrupt this.

Researchers need a long-term solution to allow them to continue working together on the big challenges our societies face, transforming peoples’ lives for the better. It’s essential that politicians quickly find a way to keep this collaboration as easy as possible.

We call on the EU and the UK to sign a research and innovation agreement as soon as possible. This should include:

  • A commitment by European countries to work together to make the European Research Area a world leader in science;

  • Full researcher mobility between the UK and the rest of Europe for all levels and career stages;

  • A commitment to collaboration, including UK associate membership of Horizon Europe;

  • Co-operation on regulations that support science.

Reason

Sign our petition to show that science is stronger with international collaboration. #dealforscience

News

  • Dear petition supporters,

    On 24 December, the EU and UK secured a trade deal. It was heartening news that the deal includes UK participation in Horizon Europe – this is crucial for the health, wealth and wellbeing of everyone in Europe, the UK and beyond. This means that UK researchers will be able to apply for EU grants and can continue to be collaborative partners for EU researchers. Please share this news with your networks.

    The negotiators continued efforts in prioritising talks last year reflects the importance of research to people everywhere – now, more than ever. Thank you from all of us at Wellcome, EuroScience and EU-LIFE for your support for a #dealforscience. It has been important to demonstrate support from all Member States... further

  • Dear Petition Supporter,

    Thank you for your support for EU-UK science collaboration.

    International collaboration makes science stronger and we should not let Brexit disrupt this. Ensuring that the UK can join the Horizon Europe programme will ensure researchers can continue to tackle shared challenges, such as cancer and climate change.

    Now is our last chance to stand up for science. The Brexit negotiations are in their final stages – the last scheduled round finishes at the very start of October. Both sides agree with the principle on ongoing collaboration and participation in Horizon Europe has been discussed frequently. However, there has been too little progress towards an agreement.

    Ahead of the last negotiating round, we published... further

My contribution may or may not be considered a proper Pro argument. However, what I mean is that the decision to leave the EU is one of the most stupid decisions the UK has ever taken. Not just when it comes to research in general and science in particular but when it comes to just about everything else.

I think the petition is not well thought through. 1) "We call on the EU and the UK to sign a research and innovation agreement as soon as possible." - Isn't such signing possible only after the UK has left the EU? Is the petition arguing that UK should leave EU ASAP? 2) "Science has been a key success of the EU and must remain a priority to keep Europe competitive. " Is this addressed to the EU that includes the UK, or only to the 27? The petition should be: Stop the Brexit madness! "No-deal" Brexit is insanity! Science in the UK and the rest of EU will suffer!
