On the possibility of opening saving accounts in other Member States

The petitioner states that it is not possible for an EU-citizen to open a saving account in another Member State than the one of residence, unlike it is the case for a standard bank account. For example, he lives in the Netherlands and cannot open a saving account in Germany nor Belgium. On the other hand, Dutch banks give higher interest rates on saving accounts offered to other EU citizens. He strongly believes that these differing practices go against the principles of the European Union.
