On the engine power of fishing vessels

The petitioner queries the procedures employed to ascertain the power of Spanish fishing vessels’ engines and maintains that in 2016 and 2017 only trawlers operating in the Bay of Biscay and the north-east were checked. In other words, the inspections were carried out on a random and unrepresentative sample of the total number of fishing vessels registered, in violation of Council Regulation (EC) No 1224/2009. He calls for inspections to take place out at sea when the vessel is fishing and for the fishing ban to be imposed on vessels whose engine power exceeds the power permitted on its fishing licence.
