Paris
—
A search was being carried out at the French offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X as part of an investigation opened in January 2025, the Paris prosecutor’s office said Tuesday.
The prosecutor’s cybercrime unit is conducting the raid, it said in a statement, with Europol also involved.
Both X chairman Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear at hearings in April, while X employees will be questioned as witnesses, according to the Paris prosecutor.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the investigation was broadened to include “Grok’s sexualized deepfakes.”

Today (19/01/26) MEPs Alexandra Geese together with Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová have initiated a cross-party letter signed by 54 Members of the European Parliament from EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA, and The Left, addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
We are calling on the European Commission to take urgent action and build European social media platforms following the recent Grok scandal—where platform X was flooded with disturbing AI-generated images, including child sexual abuse material. Europeans deserve safer digital spaces and real alternatives to US-based platforms.
We urge the Commission to:
- Invest in European tech initiatives;
- Support the development of user-focused, European-owned networks;
- Guarantee robust data portability rights for all users.
As Europe faces growing pressure from foreign interests and relies heavily on external tech infrastructure, decisive leadership is needed to protect our digital sovereignty—and our citizens.

Elon Musk’s xAI has restricted the image-generation function on its Grok AI model in response to an outcry over the proliferation of fake sexualised images on the X social media platform.
The billionaire entrepreneur came under scrutiny last week after thousands of people began using Grok to generate sexualised deepfakes of women and, in some cases, children — sharing them on X as well as the separate Grok app, both of which are run by Musk’s xAI start-up.
After facing pressure from governments around the world, including bans and threats of legal action, the company late on Wednesday announced that it had “implemented technological measures” to limit Grok from generating certain sexualised images.

LONDON — The U.S. Department of State's Sarah B. Rogers says “nothing is off the table” if the U.K. government makes good on its threat to ban Elon Musk's X over concerns about a deluge of AI-generated sexualized deepfakes on the platform.
“I would say from America's perspective ... nothing is off the table when it comes to free speech,” Rogers, the under secretary of state for public diplomacy, told GB News in an interview which aired in the U.K. in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“Let's wait and see what Ofcom does and we'll see what America does in response,” she added.

The American Federation of Teachers is shutting down its presence on X, after the platform's AI chatbot, Grok, produced sexually explicit images of minors, prompting concerns over child safety.
AFT President Randi Weingarten told Reuters that the social media platform had already been compromised by extremist activity and online trolling since Elon Musk's 2022 takeover.
However, the unchecked proliferation of hyper-realistic images of women and children in sexualized or degrading poses generated by Grok was the decisive factor in the union's departure.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was “appalled” by recent cases in which Grok, the AI service on Elon Musk’s social media site X, removed clothes from women and children in images posted on the platform.
“I’m appalled that a tech platform is enabling users to digitally undress women and children online,” she said in an interview with the press, including Italy’s Corriere Della Sera.
“It is unthinkable behaviour, and the harm caused by these deepfakes is very real,” von der Leyen added. “We will not be outsourcing child protection and consent to Silicon Valley. If they will not act, we will.”

LONDON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Britain's media regulator launched an investigation into Elon Musk's X on Monday over concerns its Grok AI chatbot was creating sexually intimate deepfake images in violation of its duty to protect people in the UK from illegal content.

"LEAVE X NOW: Meanwhile, EU institutions are coming under fire for continuing to rely on X to get their message out. “Elon Musk is an enemy of Europe. He despises our democracy, our rule of law, our values, and everything else that stands in the way of his greed,” said German S&D MEP Tiemo Wölken, whose party is a member of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s governing coalition. “For a long time, I was convinced it was better to engage in dialogue rather than leave the platform to become a far-right circus. But enough is enough.”
Time to walk: “Any organization remaining on X is directly supporting the network effects that keep people on it. When government organizations, politicians and other public figures leave, we take away Elon Musk’s power. This is why the European Commission, the Council and the Parliament should also stop using X,” Wölken said.
