Petition richtet sich an: European School Luxembourg I Administration

Petition Calling the European school Luxembourg I to change its “neutral” approach to the war in Ukraine.
We, the parents of the pupils of the European School Luxembourg I, ask the School:
· Raise the flag of Ukraine beside its flag.
· Light the school in yellow and blue.
· Use appropriate terms in its communications about the situation.
· Change alleged neutrality and neutral support of peace into clear expression of support to Ukraine.
· Organise lessons on the war in Ukraine, given by competent people.
· Organise actions to support Ukraine and its people in all possible ways.

Begründung

In response to the encouragement by the European School Luxembourg I to the teachers to discuss the war in Ukraine “on a neutral basis” (Letter from the Director of the School “The Situation in Ukraine” of 1 March 2022).
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor” said the Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu.
The EU has expressed a clear stance on the war in Ukraine. Every Member State, as well as the European Commission, have condemned the Russian invasion in Ukraine in the strongest of terms. The European school has to stand for the European values and call things their real names. ALL pupils of the school, including the Russian ones, need to know and understand that Russia is acting as a criminal state, brutally attacking Ukraine. Children have to know the truth and not be soaked in the delirium of neutrality, which is even not in line with the EU policy.

  • Dear signatories of the Petition,

We'd like to give you some follow-up concerning our Petition.

We forwarded the Petition with its 250 signatures and all the wonderful and truly inspiring comments to the Director of the School. Before the Easter break, we had a meeting with Mr. Wedel. He explained to us that, some days after the war started, there was a meeting of the directors of all the 13 European schools where they all decided that "school is not a political institution" and therefore, as schools, they will stay "neutral" in the face of this war; raising flags of Ukraine beside the schools is "not recommended". However, they apply a "pedagogical approach", i. e. the teachers are free to discuss the war during their lessons. Mr. Wedel admitted that the majority of the teachers are not experts in the issues of the war in Ukraine.

We strongly encouraged him to raise the question at the Directors' meeting again, perhaps, in view of what has happened during now more than two months of the war, the decision could be changed. He promised to do so and to keep us informed of the outcome.

European School I has 3300 students out of which 10-15 have Russian nationality. The Director didn't know about the number of Ukrainian students.
Some ideas raised by the Director: "You cannot impose on the children what is right and what is wrong".
"I'm open to organise a panel discussion, perhaps for older students, similar to those organised before elections, where all sides are heard".

Please feel free to send us your feedback and suggestions.

    Kind regards,

    The Petition Team

The European School ought to stand for EU values, and thus condemn any war or violence. Hoisting the Ukrainian flag is a sign of empathy and concern , and helps to create awareness, in the same way as the School already does for other communities (eg LGTB+)

This petition is not signed exclusively by parents of children attending the European School - and the petition organisers have no way of ensuring this. Hence, this petition cannot be used by the European School as basis for any decision.
