Chris Kirk of the U.S. overcame alcoholism and depression to lift the trophy for the opening game. 
Kirk won the PGA Tour's opening game "The Sentry (total prize money of $20 million)" on the 8th (Korea time) with a 29-under 263 total. 
Kirk has thus secured six PGA Tour wins. He has won the title 11 months after the Honda Classic held in February last year, receiving 3.6 million U.S. dollars in prize money. He lifted the trophy at the opening game of the PGA Tour, raising expectations for his stellar performance in the new season. 
Kirk has not won in seven years since the Crown Plaza Invitational in May 2015. He played a decisive role in helping the U.S. win the 2015 Presidents Cup in Korea, but he did not expand into a global star. 
It was because of alcoholism. He had depression and panic disorder due to sexual pressure, and he couldn't stop drinking. In May 2019, Kirk publicly announced on his social media that he would take a break from the PGA Tour to treat alcoholism. "I was on the verge of losing everything I love," Kirk said in a broadcast interview after winning the Honda Classic last year. 
With the help of his wife Tani, Kirk was able to find a counseling meeting to address his addiction and concentrate on his recovery. Kirk returned to the tour in November 2022 and made a comeback by winning the Honda Classic in 2023. He also received the PGA Tour's "Courage Award" late last year. 
In an interview with the PGA Tour, his wife Tani said, "Today is a very special day for our family. I'm really proud of what Chris and I have overcome," adding, "I think it's crazy when I think about when Chris first stopped drinking five years ago and now." 
Kirk said after winning, "I lost most of the joy of life for a while. But this time, I definitely found that joy again. I love this tough situation. It's really hard to be good at it, but I love this process. I love the process of trying to be the best myself."
Meanwhile, Sahith Tigala of the U.S., who shot 10-under par on the day, took second place. As Kirk slowed down in the second half of the rounding, Tigala successfully reversed the lead, but as his birdie putt at the 17th hole deflected off the edge of the hole, he failed to make a birdie and remained in second place by one stroke. 
As for Korean players, Ahn Byung-hoon showed last-minute endurance, but finished the tournament in fourth place, three strokes behind the leader, with a total of 26 under par and 266. Im Sung-jae made 11 birdies on the day, recording 10-under 63, and finished fifth with a total of 25-under 267. Im Sung-jae, who had 34 birdies in this tournament alone, became the main character who recorded the most birdies (72 holes) in a single PGA Tour tournament since 1983.
