Petition addressed to: European Commission / European Parliament
Fast food restaurants should stop serving dine-in meals in single-use packaging.
If people eat inside the restaurant, their food and drinks should be served on reusable plates, in real cups or glasses, and with washable cutlery. Disposable boxes, cups, lids, wrappers, and cartons should be kept for takeaway, delivery, and drive-through orders, where packaging is actually needed.
When someone eats at a table inside the restaurant, most of this waste is used for only a few minutes before it goes straight into the bin. It is unnecessary, and on this scale, it adds up to a huge amount of avoidable rubbish.
Other restaurants, cafés, canteens, and bakeries manage to wash dishes every day. Large fast food chains can do it too.
This is a simple and realistic step: no single-use packaging for meals eaten inside the restaurant.
We ask for rules that make reusable plates, cups, glasses, and cutlery the standard for all dine-in customers at fast food restaurants.
Reason
This petition is important because a lot of fast food waste is completely unnecessary.
When customers eat inside the restaurant, their meal is often still served in throwaway boxes, paper cups, plastic lids, wrappers, and cartons. These items are used for a few minutes and then go straight into the bin. That makes no sense when the customer is sitting at a table inside the restaurant.
Takeaway, delivery, and drive-through orders need packaging. But dine-in meals should be different. Restaurants should use real plates, cups, glasses, and washable cutlery for people eating on site.
This would reduce waste immediately, without asking customers to change much. It is a simple step that fast food chains are capable of taking, and it would stop a huge amount of single-use packaging from being wasted every day.
