Petition addressed to: European Parliament, Latvian Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development

Rights of Nature gives ecosystems a legal identity of their own – the right to exist, to remain healthy, and to be restored when damaged.
Each protected ecosystem would be assigned a guardian — a citizens' committee, a municipality, or a recognised nature protecting organisation — that could act on its behalf in court and monitor its health, in the same way that a trustee acts on behalf of a person.

Reason

Latvia's and the world's ecosystems are facing ever-growing threats. According to data from the European Environment Agency, the number of freshwater species in Europe has declined by 81% since 1970, and Latvia is no exception. This problem affects everyone, as the quality of drinking water, agricultural productivity, and the biodiversity that sustains the stability of our food chain all depend on healthy ecosystems.

Thank you so much for your support, Martins Roberts Saulevičs, Rīga
