Reason

Shohei Ohtani (LA Dodgers) made another history.

He was on par with Hideki Matsui of "Godzilla." Ohtani hit a superior two-run shot in a game against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday (Korea time). This is his fifth season of the season.

With these home runs, Ohtani successfully broke Matsui's record of most home runs by a Japanese player (175). He joined the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 and started his Major League career in seven seasons.

Prior to Ohtani's appearance, Matsui was one of the most successful Asian hitters in the Major League. He had 100 RBIs for three consecutive years, and set the 2004 Asian player record for most home runs in a single season in the Major League. While playing as a home run batter in Japan, he earned the nickname Godzilla and also served as a central hitter for the prestigious New York Yankees in the Major League. He has the highest overall record in the Major League with 1,236 games.

Ohtani has long surpassed Matsui. As soon as he entered the Major League, he became the first player to record 10 wins and double-digit home runs in a season since he became a pitcher and batter. In addition to the Rookie of the Year award, he also received the highest honors, including the American League MVP and two-time home run king. When Ohtani achieved his 100th home run in the 2022 season, Matsui gave a thumbs-up, saying, "You are one level above me in every aspect, including style and record."

Ohtani's goal now is to set the record for most Asian home runs in the Major League Baseball.

The record holder is Choo Shin-soo (currently SSG Landers). Choo, who has played in the Major League for 20 years, ranks first in the number of home runs (218) and long hitters (586) in the Asian Big League. Ohtani has hit more than 30 home runs in three consecutive seasons, and as of Tuesday, he has 346 long hitters. Some predict that he may break Choo's record within this season.
