Japan's Nagasaki Prefecture (photo) will "reduce" the department in charge of this year's integrated resort (IR) theme and rename it, the prefectural council's general affairs committee said on the 19th (local time).
The departments concerned have been dealing with attempts by big cities to attract tourist resorts along with casinos. 경마사이트프로
In late December, Japan's tourism agency under Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Nagasaki's IR proposal did not meet the required criteria set by Japan's national basic policy on IR, citing concerns about financing.
What is now known as Nagasaki's "IR Promotion Department" will be renamed "IR Office," changed to 2024 based on meeting progress information, and reviewed by GGRAsia's Japan correspondent.
The announcement noted that the IR office would have fewer employees than under the IR promotion department banner, but gave no details.
The newly named office will be "in charge of coordination with national governments to facilitate the release of information on past plans," public broadcaster NHK reported separately.
Late last month, Nagasaki Prefecture's governor, Genko Oishi, said he had taken the view that it would be "nearly impossible" to reconsider Japan's central authority's decision not to approve plans for a meeting submitted in April 2022.
The Nagasaki plan raised 438.3 billion yen (currently $2.95 billion).
The project was scheduled to land at the Huisten Bosch theme park in Sasevo City, part of the prefecture.
Nagasaki Prefecture said the project's "financial arrangers" include Credit Suisse AG, CBRE and Kanto Fitzgerald Securities Japan Inc.
At the time of the December 2023 decision against Nagasaki's proposal, the tourism agency held a press conference and noted that the prefecture would be able to submit new plans for the next window of application if it wanted to.
However, the agency said it had nothing clear about the timing of the new application window, and explained that it could only be decided by an order from the national cabinet based on what proposals the agency could make.
So far, only Osaka has been approved to hold IRs in Japan based on the prefecture's plan, which includes casino operator MGM Resorts International, which was submitted in April 2022. Osaka and Nagasaki are the only two regions that have submitted IR proposals to the government.
In early September, Osaka authorities noted that it would be "fall 2030" as early as MGM Osaka opens.
