Petition addressed to:
Citizens of the EU and of each of their constituent Nations as a whole.
Dear members of the public,
We are writing to urge you to support a petition calling on the European Union's Council Regulation (EC) No 273/2004 on drug precursors to create a new, comprehensive ranking and classification of drugs based on modern technology and knowledge.
The current classification systems, including the schedules established by the European Union's Council Regulation (EC) No 273/2004 on drug precursors, are based on outdated scientific evidence and do not accurately reflect the relative harm and dangers of different drugs. This can lead to inconsistencies and inequities in the way drugs are regulated and can undermine efforts to protect public health and safety.
A 2010 study by the Scientific Committee on Drugs ranked drugs based on their potential harm to the user, their impact on crime, and their socioeconomic effects, and found that alcohol, heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, cocaine, tobacco, amphetamine, marijuana, GHB, benzodiazepines, ketamine, methadone, mephedrone, butane, anabolic steroids, khat, ecstasy, LSD, buprenorphine, and mushrooms are the most dangerous drugs, in that order. While this study provides some valuable insights, it is based on a limited set of criteria and does not comprehensively evaluate the full range of factors that should be considered when ranking and classifying drugs.
We therefore call on the European Union to create a new ranking and classification system that is based on the most current and comprehensive scientific evidence available. This system should take into account the full range of factors that are relevant to the potential harm and dangers of different drugs, including their potential for abuse, dependence, and harmful effects on health, as well as their potential medical use and their impact on public health and safety.
We also call on the European Union to use scientific names for substances and the proper legal names in this new system, in order to ensure clarity and precision in the way drugs are classified and regulated.
Please sign this petition to show your support for this important issue. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that drug policy is based on the best available scientific evidence and that drugs are classified and regulated in a fair and consistent manner.
Reason
This petition is important on a number of levels. First and foremost, it is important for public health and safety. By basing drug policy on the best available scientific evidence, we can more effectively address the harms and dangers associated with different drugs and minimize their negative impact on society.
It is also important from a cultural, social, and economic perspective. The current drug classification systems often disproportionately affect marginalized and disadvantaged communities, leading to a range of negative consequences for individuals and society as a whole. A more evidence-based approach would be more fair and equitable and could help to reduce the negative impact of drug policy on these communities. From a political standpoint, this petition is important because it represents a call for transparency and accountability in drug policy. By basing drug classification and regulation on the most current and comprehensive scientific evidence, we can ensure that policy decisions are made in an informed and objective manner, rather than being influenced by political or other agendas.
In summary, we urge you to sign this petition calling for the European Union to modernize drug regulation by implementing a comprehensive, scientific evidence-based approach to ranking and classifying drugs. By doing so, we can protect public health and safety, promote fairness and equity, and ensure that drug policy is based on objective and reliable information.
