Macau tax revenue as junket plunges in 2022

Macau's government collected only $3.5 million (US$434,570), a tax on fees casinos pay for junkets, in 2022, down 92.5% from $46.5 million (US$46.5 million) collected in 2021.

The actual figures were released in the government's 2022 budget execution report submitted to the city council this month.
Macau's casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) fell 51.4% year-on-year to MOP 42.2 billion in 2022 due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. VIP sales fell 64.4% year-on-year to nearly MOP 10.15 billion.
The government has previously said it expects taxes on junket fees to be reduced due to the impact of the pandemic, as well as mainland China's policies regarding "control over capital flows." The government also cited the "adjustment" phase for the city's VIP gaming sector.
Jungkits, also known as game promoters, were licensed by the Macau government to promote VIP games in Macau's casinos. Their services include: arranging gambling credits for players; collecting losses caused by high-roll play; and organizing player accommodation.
As of January 2022, Macau had 46 licensed game promoters (corporations or individuals), a decrease of 45.9% in the past 12 months. As of January this year, there were 36 of them, a 21.7% decrease year over year.
The latest drop showed a drop in the number of licensed junkets in the Macau market for the 10th consecutive year.
Macau's government estimates it will collect $10 million in MOP for commissions paid to junkets by casinos in its 2023 budget.
