Petition addressed to: Federal Government of Germany
I would ask to convert one of the German car manufacturers into a bicycle manufacturer. BMW seems to be as a suitable candidate, as it does not produce any small car: VW has Volkswagen Polo, Opel has Opel Corsa, Daimler Benz has at least the A-class of Mercedes.
Reason
German developmental and environmental organisations frequently ask foreign companies and multinational corporations to change their policy. Seldomly, though, they ask German-based companies to alter their policy.
Recently, the Volkswagen exhaust scandal (manipulation of values regarding exhaust amounts) has stirred up the German public. For interested people, though, it is not new that the announced consumption values (petrol/ gas per kilometre) are measured under very unrealistic laboratory conditions, so that the real consumption values in real usage differ widely from the announced values.
It is now time to call the German car industry to its responsibility - not just symbolically, but by converting one of its big car factories into a bicycle manufacturer. This would be of great benefit to the environment, and one of a major step towards reducing CO2 emissions world-wide.
If a conversion of BMW into a bicycle manufacturer is not possible by German and/ or European law, then the Federal Government of Germany should at least ensure that announced values for car petrol/ gas consumption and car emissions are tested under real life conditions: in Germany and throughout the member states of the European Union.
