Despite the age of 67, Bernhard Langer (Dokyi), who is still showing off his competitiveness in the PGA Tour Champions, a senior stage where only people over 50 will participate, has expressed his intention not to participate in the Masters of the Myeongin Thermal War after this year.
In an interview with the PGA website ahead of the opening of the 2024 Tour Championship on the 18th (Korea time), Langer said, "This year is my last Masters appearance. I've already decided."
The Masters gives permanent berths to all-time winners. Players can participate every year if they want.
Langer, who first competed in the Masters in 1982, wore a green jacket twice in 1985 and 1993 and competed every year except in 1983 and 2011.
If Langer takes part in the Masters, which marks its 88th anniversary this year, it will be his 41st appearance. It is 48 percent of the total, but it is still far from the record for most appearances. The record for most appearances in the Masters is 52 times held by Gary Player of South Africa. Arnold Palmer, who died in 2016, played 50 times. The 41st event is tied for 11th.
Langer, who was born in 1957, failed to make the cut at the Masters for the last three consecutive years. Of the last 17 appearances, she was the only one who ranked within the top 20 in 2014 to tie for eighth.
"When other players hit Iron 9, I have to hit Iron 3 or a hybrid club," Langer said, adding, "It's hard to compete, but I don't avoid challenges." He also expressed his willingness to fight in the last Masters this year.
Langer, who has won three PGA Tour titles, has won a total of 42 PGA Tour titles and 46 PGA Tour Champions titles. Among his 46 wins in the Tour Champions, 12 are included in the major championships. This year's Masters will take place on April 12 at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
