Macau received an average of "more than 100,000" visitors every day in the first half of August, exceeding the government's expectations, Maria Helena de Sena Fernandez, director of the Macau Government Tourism Authority (MGTO), told local media on Wednesday.
The tourism agency expected Macau to receive "about 80,000" visitors daily in August, Senna Fernandez told reporters in early July.
On the sidelines of Wednesday's event, as the recent summer holiday season has come to an end, the tourism chief said the average daily tally was more than "90,000." In September, a month when most schools in China and the surrounding area resume classes, she expected Macau's daily entry to be "low."
According to the city's Office for National Statistics, nearly 2.76 million visitors arrived in July, which averaged 89,000 daily. This means that July recovered about 78% of July 2019 levels, or in the trading year just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As in pre-COVID times, the inbound market in July was dominated by travelers from mainland China. The market's 1.9 million visitor arrivals represented about 74% of mainland China's visitor volume for the same month in 2019.
According to census service data, 129,756 visitors, or an average of 4,186 visitors per day, arrived in July 2023 from "international" markets outside the Greater China region.
The tourism agency said in a press release Wednesday that the daily average of foreign visitors sequentially increased "5 percent" from July in the first 17 days of August.
Macau has a public policy aspiration to increase the proportion of tourists, including gambling tourists. The MGTO recently mentioned offering discounts to overseas consumers on the cost of flights to Macau's regional hub airport.
