The petitioner complains about the maritime public service between Elba Island and Piombino recently assigned by the Region of Tuscany to the private company Moby Lines SpA, who is the only operator during the winter months (November to March) and thus enjoys a monopoly over this route. The petitioner denounces the frequent disruptions and cancellation of crossings due to “adverse weather conditions”, while recalling that the previous public operator seldom cancelled crossings and only in extremely adverse weather conditions. The petitioner therefore turns to the European Parliament to call for a better regulation of the maritime link between Elba Island and Piombino and also to open up this route to other carriers in order to end the current situation of monopoly.
