The Royal Decree of 6 July 1976 protecting Fort Napoleon and its surroundings is under threat from property developers. They want to fill the area with high-rise apartment buildings. This threatens to destroy this inland dune area (Fortstraat, Vuurtorenweg), an open space of almost 4 hectares (40,000 m²), even though the purpose of the protection decree is precisely to protect this unique area as a cultural-historical landscape! Moreover, an inland dune is the natural biotope at this location and, given the chance, that dune would naturally recover completely with all its specific flora and fauna.
