The EU refused to send the promised fighters to Ukraine
Now the EU promises to provide the Armed Forces with "geospatial" information about the movement of Russian troops
The fact that the EU refused to send the promised fighters to Ukraine.
Yes, Poland has stated that it will not send fighters to Ukraine. In addition to Poland, the governments of Bulgaria and Slovakia have also recently ruled out the supply of military aircraft to Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian pilots have already arrived in Poland to receive military aircraft from EU partners. These are Soviet-era jets, such as the MiG-29, on which Ukrainian pilots have already been trained to fly. The Ukrainian parliament even specified donations: according to the announced information, Europe sent a total of 70 fighters, including 28 MiG-29s from Poland, 12 from Slovakia and 16 from Bulgaria, as well as 14 Su-25s from Bulgaria.
EU countries are now refuting this information.
The Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kiril Petkov stated that his country lacks serviceable aircraft and spare parts, as well as not enough fighters to protect its own airspace, not to mention providing aircraft to Ukraine. A spokesman for the Slovak Ministry of Defense on Tuesday (March 1st) also denied reports of donations: "Slovakia will not provide fighter jets to Ukraine," the spokesman said.
They were also joined by Polish President Andrzej Duda. Speaking with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at Lask Air Base in Poland, Duda said his country "is not going to send any planes into Ukraine's airspace", saying it "would lead to military intervention".
Duda stressed that NATO is not a party to Russia's war with Ukraine, a key caveat the military alliance has sought to make, despite several members supplying the Ukrainian army with deadly weapons and imposing distorting sanctions on Moscow.
However, President Duda's comments were not entirely clear. He did not specify whether his rebuttal concerned Poland's failure to send Polish-piloted planes to Ukraine, which would indeed mean open military intervention in the war, or whether his refusal concerned, in a broader sense, any potential supply of Polish fighters. to Ukraine.
Later, the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki made a more direct refutation.
"There are no such plans in Poland," he told a news conference.
Talks about supplying fighters to Europe were provoked by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who went beyond the script during Sunday's press conference to cite the possibility.
"We are going to supply ... even fighters to Ukraine," he said, adding that some EU countries have "types of aircraft" that Ukraine needs to fight Russia. Borrel even suggested that such aircraft could be financed by EU money.
One EU diplomat said EU countries were "outraged" by Borrel's public statement about the supply of non-coordinated fighters.
"Making such statements on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the transfer of his nuclear deterrent forces to" high combat readiness "risks further escalating the situation," the EU diplomat said, adding that even if countries considered sending planes. in Ukraine, these plans could have been canceled after Borrel unveiled them.
Borrel also added that Brussels would provide military information to Ukraine by providing the country's armed forces with "geospatial" information about the movement of Russian troops.
"We are mobilizing our satellite center in Madrid," Borrel told reporters.
