I am claiming a severe and persistent violation of EU environmental laws (Directive 2008/98/EC) and the right to a healthy life in Câmpulung Muscel, Romania. For over 10 years, more than 1,500 tons of hazardous chemical waste (including cyanide residues) have been abandoned on the former ARO industrial site, directly threatening the health of 30,000 citizens.
Despite numerous media reports and official warnings, the Romanian authorities remain in a state of "stand-by," and the national judicial system has failed to resolve the environmental liability cases, leading to an unacceptable delay in justice (violating Article 6 of the ECHR).
I am requesting the European Parliament to intervene, investigate the lack of action from the Romanian Ministry of Environment, and ensure that EU safety standards are enforced to prevent an imminent ecological disaster. This claim is filed by a citizen exhausted by systemic failure, seeking European protection where national institutions have failed.
Reason
This petition is critical because it represents a desperate call for help from 30,000 European citizens whose right to life and health is being traded for bureaucratic indifference.
- Immediate Danger: The presence of thousands of tons of toxic waste (including cyanide) in a populated area is a "ticking time bomb" for a major chemical disaster.
- Systemic Failure: It highlights the failure of a Member State to protect its citizens and to provide a functional judicial system, as cases regarding this pollution are being stalled for years without resolution.
- Restoring Hope: It is a test for the European Union's ability to protect its citizens when national institutions fail. Saving Câmpulung means proving that "European values" are not just words, but a shield for every citizen, even those exhausted by years of injustice.
