The casino industry contributed $240 billion to the U.S. economy in 2013, according to a study published Tuesday. That includes $38 billion in local, state and federal taxes paid last year.

Gaming sales accounted for 83% of total revenue ($67 billion). The report also included the impact of some legitimate online games on the economy.

The U.S.-based game maker recorded sales of about $6 billion last year.

The American Game Association (AGA) presented its findings at the Global Game Expo (G2E) 2014 press conference at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas this week.

"This study demonstrates a vast industry that supports communities across the country through business connectivity and job creation," Oxford Economics director Adam Sacks said in a statement. "It also supports a wide range of government services given the relatively high level of taxes on the casino industry."

The study looked at the gambling industry's total revenue and tax payments. It also considered the industry's impact on other businesses, mainly related to tourism, using multipliers.

The casino sector supported more than 1.7 million jobs nationwide, 734,000 of which were directly employed by the gaming industry while the rest of the workers were indirectly employed by economic activity in the industry.

Research has shown that the gaming industry has generated more than $14 billion in consumer spending in restaurants, retail stores, hotels and other businesses. The sector has also paid suppliers about $60 billion and injected $78 billion into the economy through employee spending.

"While we have long known that the industry's contribution has been understated, these numbers are larger than we expected," said Jeff Freeman, AGA's president and chief executive, in a statement.

"Game is doing great in hundreds of American communities. Our future success depends on our strong partnership with policymakers that enable innovation, reinvention, and more job creation," he added.
