S. South Korean President Announces Layoff of Illicit Employers in Gangwon Province

Spokesperson Kim Eui-kyeom told a press briefing that "President Moon Jae In should take prompt and thorough action against employment-related irregularities by public institutions well known as the Kangwon Land case," Yonhap News reported.

According to domestic media reports, the prosecution announced on March 8 that it would seize and search the offices of two members of the Liberty Korea Party, including Yeom Dong-yeol and Kwon Sung-dong.

The JoongAng Ilbo says CEO Yeom is facing allegations that he asked the casino company's human resources department to hire 46 applicants in 2012. When 19 of them failed to pass, CEO Yeom asked for a new hiring process for them, and as a result, seven joined the company a few months later.

Prosecutors reportedly raided the home of a high-ranking official from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Tourism, who was accused of asking Kangwon Land to hire four individuals in exchange for helping approve the casino's facility on March 10.

Eradicating influence over corporate recruitment has been an important topic in President Moon's administration. Kangwon Land's alleged misconduct reportedly began six years ago during other presidential governments, and the first prosecution related to the matter was made in 2015.

The former chief executive of the casino operator was formally arrested in December on charges of using influence while in office.

Kangwon Land Casino Resort is located in a remote alpine region in Gangwon Province, 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the capital, Seoul.

The casino operator is said to be under political pressure in general terms, as the Korean government tries to limit revenue growth on all forms of locals-focused gambling. The company has been ordered to reduce the daily opening hours of its game venues at its only casino resort since April 1.
