While clubs that need starting pitchers continue to sign contracts with FA starters one after another in the new year, Ryu Hyun-jin's future is still uncertain.
The New York Yankees signed FA right-hander Marcus Stroman for a two-year, 37 million-dollar contract on the 13th (Korean time). On the same day, the San Francisco Giants brought in 100-mile fastball right-hander Jordan Hicks for four years and 44 million dollars. Hicks has thrown mainly as a bullpen pitcher since his Major League debut, but he will join the rotation in San Francisco based on his experience as a minor league starter.
Yankees and San Francisco are mentioned by local media as Ryu`s expected destinations. The New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs also added Sean Munaia (two years, 28 million U.S. dollars) and Shota Imana (four years, 53 million dollars), respectively, to strengthen their starting pitchers.
There are not many buyers left in the market now. I don't know if Ryu Hyun-jin hasn't received any offers yet, or if he hasn't received any offers, but there's nothing good about time.
Meanwhile, local media Bleacher Report (BR) highlighted the remaining starting pitchers in the FA market in its article titled "Imanaga and Stroman have signed a contract. Reorganizing the starting pitcher market." The most interesting part is which club needs a starting pitcher.
BR cited the Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and San Francisco as the "teams that desperately need one starter." In the case of San Francisco, it plans to use Hicks, who has played 204 games as relief and eight games as starters since his Major League debut, but it means that there is not enough proven starters. Moreover, Robbie Ray and existing starter Alex Cobb, who were brought in by trade on the 6th, will not return until this summer to recover from their injuries.
Minnesota has yet to provide adequate starting pitchers since Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda and Tyler Marley left for the FA. Baltimore needs a veteran to lead young starters. San Diego received four young pitchers when it gave up Juan Soto to the Yankees, but needs proven starters.
BR singled out seven teams that potentially require starting pitchers: the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Los Angeles Angels, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Texas Rangers, and the Toronto Blue Jays. In other words, there are about 11 teams that can recruit Ryu.
BR introduced major FA starters and also reported the expected size of the contract.
Regarding Ryu Hyun-jin, the media said, "It is somewhat surprising that no team has yet offered a one-year contract to Ryu Hyun-jin, who pitched well as soon as he returned last year. Considering that many mid-tier pitchers have disappeared from the market recently," adding, "We predict a one-year contract of $8 million with the Toronto Blue Jays."
So far, Ryu's estimated ransom has been more than $10 million on a one-year contract. Most media expected a total of $10 million to $13 million on a one-year, or one-plus-one-year contract. BR expected a lower $8 million.
In addition to Ryu Hyun-jin, BR presented expected destinations and contracts for FA starters Blake Snell (San Francisco five-year, $125 million), Jordan Montgomery (Texas Rangers five-year, $100 million), Mike Clevinger (L.A. Angels two-year, $26 million), Clayton Kershaw (uncontracted until the opening day), Michael Lorenzen (Minnesota one year, $12 million), and James Paxton (San Diego one year, $10 million).
