Macau Legend Development, a Hong Kong-listed casino services company, is aiming for a "soft launch within the first quarter of 2020" to expand its Lao casino resort, Saban Legend Resort Hotel and Entertainment Complex, Sheldon Trainor, the company's executive director, told GGRAsia.

The expansion will focus on "premium mass and VIP customers," with additional gaming facilities in addition to those currently offered at the resort, and will include "five-star" accommodation, Mr. Trainor said.

The accommodation is located in Savannachet, near the Laos border with Thailand. Casino gambling is not allowed within the latter country.

"All we need to do is install a separate new VIP wing," the trainer said. The company previously said it is earmarking $15 million for expansion.

"It will be a new VIP boutique hotel with 40 suites, VIP gaming and entertainment zones with golf simulators, driving ranges, sports bars, spas, and swimming pool facilities. This new amenities will be best-in-class across the region," the Macau Legend executive added, referring to the potential for competition.

In a conference panel discussing Southeast Asian markets at the recent Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Asian Casino Industry Trade Fair, Mr. Trainer noted that his company has been working to provide a better transport link with Saban Legend Resort and a new in-house player loyalty program. In a recent commentary to GGRAsia, he also noted that Saban Legend Resort is not positioning itself as a junket-oriented business.

"We didn't get a big VIP player like Macau, and we're running a small business, so we don't really care about that," Trainor said, noting that the existing customers of Savan Legend Resorts are mostly from Thailand or other parts of Southeast Asia.

"There's not a lot of junket business in Laos and most of it is in-house. There are a few small junkets, but... It's not like Macau, it's not like Cambodia, which is mainly a junket-led business," he added.
