New justification:
To those who say "but tourism is how we make our living," our answer is: Exactly. Tourism is how we make our living, which is precisely why we cannot afford to let it destroy itself. For at least a decade now, Paros has taken a path of tourism development that is indifferent to the island's sustainability and its long-term future. The direction the island is following is toward ever-larger units, more luxury, and a heavier footprint. The additional supply of tourist beds will burden, rather than benefit, the natural environment, the island's infrastructure, and indeed the very future of tourism on our island.
The large majority of the new beds belong to big chains and investment funds that are already buying up the island. Their profits are not shared with the local community; their guests stay inside the "resort." The small guesthouse, the taverna, the family-run rental room, all of these will find themselves competing against giants, with rents and costs that keep climbing. Once Paros ends up looking like a suburb, the visitors who loved it will go elsewhere. The capital will move on to the next island. The concrete and the scorched earth will stay with us forever.
What we demand: We demand that the final design of Paros's Τ.Π.Σ. include no provision for new accommodation units. That the further reckless and destructive exploitation of our island be stopped. No new tourist beds on Paros!
