urban engaged university??, performativity, virtue signalling

The rector's timing compounds this. Announcing the partnership publicly at the 2025 opening ceremony — only to subsequently promise not to sign new agreements with Israeli partners — suggests awareness of the controversy without genuine accountability for it. That sequence of events is not an ethical position; it is reputation management. Students, staff, and civil society actors deserve better from an institution that presents itself as a model for engaged, values-driven higher education.

process failure, structural bias, institutional failure

academic freedom has never been understood as unconditional. Universities routinely decline partnerships on ethical grounds — with tobacco companies & authoritarian governments. The infrastructure for ethical review of research partnerships exists because the academy recognises that not all collaborations are compatible with its values. If VUB's ethical committees approved this partnership without flagging Elbit's role in human rights' violations, that is a indefensible process failure.

civic engagement, selective freedom, hypocrisy

Proponents of the academic freedom objection tend to ignore whose freedom is being centred. Civil society actors, including researchers & activists, have been prosecuted by OIP-Elbit for organising against the Oudenaarde facility — with claimed damages between €10k & €100k per activist (S4). These are people exercising precisely the kind of critical, civic engagement that universities claim to model & support. To invoke academic freedom to defend a partnership is hypocritical liberal principle.

academic freedom, fallacy, ethical inconsistency

Academic freedom protects researchers from ideological interference — it does not obligate institutions to maintain any specific corporate partnership. Universities routinely decline collaborations on ethical grounds; that infrastructure exists for exactly this situation. No researcher's freedom is curtailed by VUB ending a contract. Invoking academic freedom to shield an arms manufacturer's subsidiary, while that company prosecutes civil society activists, is not principle — it is misdirection.
