Japan's government minister in charge of the country's casino resort application process declined to say when authorities would announce the Osaka and Nagasaki submissions announced in late April.

The official was asked about Osaka and Nagasaki's respective efforts to develop an integrated resort (IR) with casinos, which is expected to be announced by the middle of the month.

Mr Saito replied that a review committee set up by the Ministry of Education is in the process of reviewing the plan, and he did not want to comment on its status and when the committee could announce it.

Osaka's proposed operating partner, a subsidiary of U.S.-based MGM Resorts International, previously said it expected to hear from the government by this fall.

Based on the current timetable, it is unlikely that any casino resort will be able to open in Japan before the end of the current decade.

According to information gathered by GGRAsia's Japan correspondent, the review committee consists of seven academic professors each covering a different field of expertise and scholars from different universities. In addition, the body has a doctor who is known to have expertise in gambling addiction. The committee was established in July 2021.

On Sept. 28, the Nagasaki prefectural government told the current parliament that it had not received any contact from the government for the time being regarding the IR topic, and that it did not have any information about the time zone in which state authorities were performing their duties.

On Aug. 10, when Fumio Fumio of Japan announced his second cabinet, Mr. Saito stayed in office. There was a change in the high-ranking position of the National Public Safety Commission, the government agency that oversees the Japanese casino regulatory committee.
