"Today is one of the happiest days of the year," said Cha, who presented the award to 18 promising soccer players. "I was proud to see many players enter Europe recently, but I was worried a lot about resolving conflicts between generations experiencing different cultures. "Now that I think about it, it was a very shameful idea."
"In Europe, people think that all seniors, juniors, and adults are colleagues. It is not strange at all to strongly express one's opinion to the coaching staff. Young players have no choice but to naturally learn and resemble the culture they have experienced," he said. "Now, Korean soccer is facing an important period, in which cultural differences between East and West and generation gap have been added. The atmosphere is hard to understand, and the world is changing."
Cha Bum-keun was familiar with Western culture, playing in Germany early on and continuing to interact with European soccer players even after his retirement. Nevertheless, Cha stressed the value of Eastern culture.
"Young generations may think the humility and sacrifice that they emphasize in the East are tacky and useless. However, this relationship is a weapon and asset that Koreans inherit (in their own culture). It is also the reason that Park Ji-sung and I could be loved after being successful in Europe," Cha said.
In addition, Cha revealed a story from the past. Otto Rehagel, who visited the stadium on the day Cha Du-ri made his professional debut in Bielefeld, Germany, after the 2002 World Cup Korea-Japan, advised Cha not to do whatever he wants, saying, "You can't shut the door in any case."
