We, the undersigned citizens, strongly oppose the planned expansion of the Mertert tank storage facility (Tanklux).
The proposed increase from the current 60,000 m³ to a total of 150,000 m³ would massively expand the storage capacity for petrol, diesel, and kerosene and therefore poses a significant safety risk to Temmels and the surrounding communities.
According to our mayor’s assessment, an evacuation of Temmels could even become necessary in the event of a disaster.
This also contradicts the political objectives of the energy transition, which aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
We reject the expansion because it:
- represents a disproportionate safety risk for people and the environment,
- is incompatible with climate goals and the necessary move away from fossil fuels,
- has cross-border implications and must therefore be thoroughly examined and critically monitored.
By signing this petition, we call for this expansion to be prevented.
理由
The planned expansion of the Mertert/Tanklux tank storage facility from 60,000 m³ to 150,000 m³ would more than double the amount of stored petrol, diesel, and kerosene – directly opposite our municipality of Temmels, separated only by the Moselle River. This massive increase poses a significant safety risk to our residents.
According to our mayor’s assessment, an evacuation of Temmels could even become necessary in the event of a disaster or major incident. Such a risk is unacceptable for a residential border community of this size.
At the same time, the expansion contradicts the political goals of the energy transition, which aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels. It is difficult to understand why additional storage capacity for fossil fuels should be created while we are legally required to reduce CO₂ emissions.
The impact is cross-border — Germany and Luxembourg are equally affected. Yet citizens currently have only very limited opportunities to participate in the process. This petition creates visibility, increases public pressure, and sends a clear signal to the decision-makers that the people of Temmels and the surrounding region will not accept this development.
We call for a clear prioritisation of safety, precaution, and climate objectives — and therefore the prevention of this tank storage expansion.

I agree with the people in the area that, especially in case of a disaster, the expansion could have serious negative consequences for people and the environment. I also believe that it disproportionally benefits the fossil fuel industry as opposed to the citizens and, that it contradicts the Luxembourgish government‘s agenda to promote sustainability. Rather than support the fossil fuel industry, we should be looking for ways to minimise our dependence and better current and future citizens‘ lives.
I live in the village across from the storage facility, and the danger of being in such exposure is something I cannot ignore. Expending means an increase of potential harm, not only material-wise but also health and environmental. We need to do better and think of people before taking such decisions. The decision should have been of reducing the size of the facility, not an expansion.
