The planned expansion of the Mertert/Tanklux tank storage facility from 60,000 m³ to 150,000 m³ would more than double the amount of stored petrol, diesel, and kerosene – directly opposite our municipality of Temmels, separated only by the Moselle River. This massive increase poses a significant safety risk to our residents.

According to our mayor’s assessment, an evacuation of Temmels could even become necessary in the event of a disaster or major incident. Such a risk is unacceptable for a residential border community of this size.

At the same time, the expansion contradicts the political goals of the energy transition, which aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels. It is difficult to understand why additional storage capacity for fossil fuels should be created while we are legally required to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The impact is cross-border — Germany and Luxembourg are equally affected. Yet citizens currently have only very limited opportunities to participate in the process. This petition creates visibility, increases public pressure, and sends a clear signal to the decision-makers that the people of Temmels and the surrounding region will not accept this development.

We call for a clear prioritisation of safety, precaution, and climate objectives — and therefore the prevention of this tank storage expansion.
