Petition is addressed to: Louth County Council

We want the council to immediately address two critical public safety hazards and protect our local heritage and protect the public pathway of Watery Hill Steps.

This will be implemented by:
Rezoning the unstable embankment from residential to Open Space/Conservation to permanently ban building and prevent a catastrophic slope failure. Prevent the newly constructed apartments and historic housing from geotechnical instability.
Legally protecting the historic steps and area by designating them as an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA) and adding the steps and wall to the Record of Protected Structures (RPS), guaranteeing public access. This will also prevent any privatisation attempts of public spaces and pathways.
Installing any if the long-delayed traffic calming measures, such as a one-way system, speed cameras, and zebra crossings, to stop the frequent accidents on our streets.

Reason

It is important because lives are in immediate and proven danger from both a collapsing hillside and dangerously speeding traffic.
Action is needed now because:

  • The Slope is Actively Failing: The hill is dangerously steep, has already subsided, and has been deemed an "unacceptable risk" by the national planning board. Further delay risks a major landslide that could cause injury, death, and severe property damage.
  • People Are Being Hurt in Traffic: Emergency services have responded to multiple recent accidents, proving that the dangerous traffic conditions are causing real harm right now. Every day without action risks another serious incident.

These are issues that residents are pointing out to politicians, local council and government agencies for the last 15 years.
