Background
In the residential quarter Wildgarten in Vienna Meidling are living around 2,300 people – not counting the surrounding area. During the planning process, good public transport connections were promised. So far, only bus line 63A has been implemented.
The City of Vienna rightly prides itself on its excellent public transport network. The connection of Wildgarten definitely does not live up to this standard.
On the Wildgarten website, under “Location,” the S-Bahn station Hetzendorf is mentioned. In the YouTube video in which ARE was involved, the project is promoted with ecology and a car-free area – while at the same time claiming accessibility to Vienna’s city center within 30 minutes. Neither of these (still) corresponds to reality.
The construction of the S-Bahn station Benyastraße is heavily delayed and will only be completed in about 10 years. An additional bus line 63B is planned. This will then provide a direct connection to the S-Bahn station Wien Hetzendorf and also to Schöpfwerk – but not until 2027.
Our concern
We wish and expect a pragmatic short-term (interim) solution. This is particularly important for elderly people, commuters, schoolchildren, and travelers (with luggage). Commercial providers also wish for a better connection – both for their employees and for customers. In addition, Wildgarten was intentionally designed to minimize car use. Many residents do not own a car – but then public transport must be adapted accordingly!
We see two possible solutions that would not require structural changes and could therefore be implemented quickly:
- Extension of bus line 16A by two stops (Wildgartenallee, Mona-Lisa-Steinerweg). However, this only makes sense if the route operates with a frequency typical for urban buses. This would connect the Wildgarten not only to the S-Bahn but also to bus line 62 (Breitenfurter Straße) and Am Schöpfwerk.
- A slight route modification of line 63A so that it serves the S-Bahn station Hetzendorf and ideally already begins in the west at the tram station 60 (Riedelgasse) (connections to Lainz and Mauer) and then continues all the way through to Meidling station.
In addition, there are further aspects in this context:
- There is no night bus. The night bus lines N62 or N65 stop more than 1 km away. As in other outer districts, line 63A could operate longer at night.
- Inadequate bus stop infrastructure:
- Covered bus stops (with digital departure displays).
- Increased safety in bus stop areas (zebra crossings).
Selgitus
- Travel to the inner districts of the city currently takes more than 1 hour by public transport (with transfers), while by car it is just over 30 minutes.
- During the planning of the residential project, a good public transport connection was promised.
- Many people in Wildgarten do not own a car, or would like to use their car less frequently.
- The biggest time bottleneck is the connection between Wildgarten and the S-Bahn station.
- The relevance of this issue for a large residential project such as Wildgarten (and its surrounding area) is well known and acknowledged. However, a dedicated S-Bahn station will only be built in about 10 years, and an expanded bus connection is only planned for 2027.
