PRESS RELEASE - “No to Wind Park Scansano” – Petition Gathers Over 500 Signatures in Protest Against Wind Power Installation in Maremma

Scansano, Tuscany - 22/02/2025 – In a rapidly growing movement, over 500 concerned residents, business owners, and supporters have signed a petition opposing the proposed installation of an industrial-scale wind power generation park in the heart of Scansano, Magliano in Toscana and Grosseto. The petition, now gaining significant traction, is calling for the preservation of the rural, agricultural, and tourism-focused character of the region, which is globally renowned for producing Morellino di Scansano, IGT wines, IGP-certified olive oil, and its unspoiled natural beauty.

Located in central Tuscany, Scansano, Magliano in Toscana and Grosseto are thriving agricultural hubs, where the local economy relies heavily on the cultivation of vineyards, olive groves, and the flourishing tourist industry. The area, a hidden gem in the Maremma region, draws visitors for its pristine landscapes, rich heritage, and peaceful countryside. However, local residents and stakeholders are expressing strong opposition to plans for a large-scale wind farm project that threatens to alter the unique visual landscape and disrupt the delicate balance of the region’s ecosystem. The petition "No to Wind Park Scansano" has quickly gained widespread support, with people from all over Italy and beyond joining in protest against the potential damage this industrial project could bring to one of Tuscany's most beloved areas.

“We are not against renewable energy,” said Stuart French, a local resident and one of the petition’s organizers. “We support sustainable energy solutions that are in harmony with our environment. However, the proposed wind farm, which would be situated in an area central to vineyards, olive groves, forests and complex eco systems within an organically farmed area is incompatible with the protection of our agricultural traditions and the beauty that makes Maremma a tourist destination. We cannot allow an industrial project of this scale to damage the land that sustains us.”

The Maremma region is not only home to some of the finest wines in Tuscany, such as Morellino di Scansano, but also boasts a rich heritage of organic farming practices, particularly in the cultivation of IGP olive oil. The land here is known for its fertile soils, ideal for the cultivation of these premium products, which are internationally recognized for their high quality and unique characteristics. An industrial wind park could not only damage the environment but threaten the livelihoods of local producers.

Preserving Scansano's Landscape and Identity

Tourism is another vital industry in Scansano. The area’s charming agriturismos, scenic vineyards, and peaceful countryside are what attract thousands of visitors each year. From hiking through Maremma National Park to enjoying local food and wines, the unspoiled landscapes are a cornerstone of the region's identity. The potential wind park would disrupt not only the landscape but also the tourist experience, turning a tranquil haven into an industrial zone that detracts from the natural beauty.

Join the Movement

The petition is being actively shared among residents, visitors, and supporters on social media platforms such as Facebook, local blogs, and news agencies. The goal is to bring awareness to the issue and halt the project before irreversible damage is done.

Over 500 signatures have been collected so far, but organizers are calling on even more people to join the cause. As a symbol of unity and commitment, the petition urges decision-makers to rethink the location and scale of this wind park and instead explore more sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions that are in line with the natural heritage of Maremma.
