The R380 urban road into Loughrea, Co. Galway, Ireland, from the west should be a safe route for families walking to our playgrounds, tennis courts, and the lake. Instead, it has become a motorists speedway - on a short 1 km stretch of road in the town.
In June 2025, Galway County Council's own survey found that 74% of drivers were breaking the 50 km/h speed limit. The fastest recorded? 119 km/h—in a zone where children cross to reach two playgrounds and the walking park that is Corry’s Field. We are calling on Galway County Council to:
1. Install table-top ramps at all three pedestrian crossings on this stretch—physical measures that force drivers to slow down, not just signs they ignore.
2. Install a permanent speed camera to enforce the limit consistently and deter dangerous driving.
3. Reduce the speed limit from the car park to the West Bridge to 30Kph
The council has the data. They know the danger. Now they need to act.

This petition is aimed at protecting children, families and individuals who use the lakeside amenities on the Gort Road entrance to Loughrea. At present 74% of motorists are breaking the 50kph speed limit. the stretch of road has already been the scene of one fatal accident, and several near misses, as motorists regularly violate the red lights on all 3 sets of pedestrian lights on this 1 Km stretch of road.

My health and safety and that of my family and other visitors is at risk when trying to access the facilities at the lake including the playground, the tennis courts, the walks, due to the speed of vehicles including bikes on the Gort Road. Not alone are they often over the speed limit but they are going so fast they either don’t see the traffic lights on red or they are going too fast to stop. Trying to get out of side roads onto the Gort Road is a nightmare because of the speed of vehicles on the Road. We need measures to minimise the impact of these risks.
